Mixing colors on the paper can produce gorgeous results!  Wet down the paper and then paint two different colors next to each other. Either let the colors blend on their own or use your brush and blend the area where the two colors touch to create a third color.

Creating a variegated wash is really simple, and knowledge of this wash is most beneficial in watercolor painting.  Simply paint colors next to each other, overlapping the edges of the different colors while the paint is still wet.  You can see this wash in the foliage of the oak tree.
